Finding Common Ground Easily with Good Timing
When I see building work, and ladders…
Ladders can pop up in the most wonderful and unexpected places. My 2019 trip to North America is the perfect example. My husband, David used to live in Canada, and I went to university in upstate New York, so we planned a holiday to reminisce and revisit some of the places we loved.
We saw the beautiful gorges that surrounded my campus at Cornell and stayed in some amazing places, including Ithaca, Niagara and Buffalo, before heading to Toronto. Things had changed, as they always do and we couldn’t believe the difference. It was fabulous to see it all again with fresh, slightly wrinkly, eyes.
By chance we were staying in an Airbnb in Cabbagetown, Toronto, above the new, flagship Annie Sloane store. It mostly caught my interest because the four days we were there the shop was being done up.
Which means ladders, outside, inside, everywhere. I thought of the link with Leo and wanted to share the new book with Annie as they proudly told me she would be there on opening day. Sadly, I missed Annie by a just few hours, but the staff were lovely, and I think, extremely happy to find a Brit who’d heard of Annie Sloane paint. I left Annie a signed copy of Leo’s Ladder and was thrilled to get an email back from her, thanking me for the book.
Here’s a little excerpt… “We never met, and I didn’t have a chance to thank you. I gave the book to my grandchildren, ages six and three – the little one is only one and just enjoys the cuddle! I read it to them, and they love Leo! It’s a delightful story with a good point to it and so I just wanted to say thank you properly! “By the way, my children were brought up in a house called Knutsford House, named after the town in Cheshire by a previous owner. So, I explained that to my grandchildren, and that our house was in Bladon in Oxfordshire.”
Isn’t life full of strange and delightful co-incidences (and ladders)?
